Experimental Design Vocab

hypothesis:  educated guess about possible relationship between 2 variables

constants:  factors that are kept the same in an investigation

Independent variable: what you change on purpose in the experiment

Dependent variable: what you are measuring in the experiment (responding)

Control:  group that is used as a comparison

Data table: chart of numerical data that organizes your data

Graphs:  visual representation of experimental data (bar or line)

Volume:  3-D space an object occupies (l x w x h)

Area: length x width

mass: amount of matter in an object

Meterstick: tool used to measure length (long distances)

Graduated cylinder:  tool used to measure liquid volume

Triple beam balance:  tool used to measure mass

Procedure:  list of steps followed during an experiment

Conclusion:  results or findings based on data collected during experiment

Metric system:  system of measurement based on units of 10

Liter:  base unit for volume of a liquid

Meter:  base unit for length

gram:  base unit for mass
Thermometer:  tool used to measure temperature
